Residency: January – February 2002
Burke’s work draws on the layering of various histories: personal, public, and geological. At Sculpture Space, he has been working on wood forms that convey a personal sense of time and memory. Burke’s outdoor installations insert an image-object into an environment, urban or rural. The images, specific to each site, reflect on the history of place.
Matthew Burke has shown his work throughout the U.S., including exhibitions at PS1MoMA in Long Island City, the International Arts Festival in Providence, RI, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. He has also developed public arts works for CUNY Law School in Flushing, NY, Long Island City Library, NY and Mobius in Boston. Burke received his MFA from Queens College, NY and his BA from Colby College in Maine.
