On September 28, 2013, collectors, artists, party-goers and all who enjoy a unique and festive event attended the 24th Annual CHAIRity Art Auction at Sculpture Space’s studio in West Utica, near the Historic Brewery District at 12 Gates Street. This signature evening featured functional objects and works of art made by local, regional, national and international artists, and included both a live and silent auction.
The hallmark of CHAIRity is the functional objects created by artists and artisans: altered, embellished, deconstructed and re-imagined chairs, tables, lamps and other furniture, as well as drawings, paintings, sculptures and other artworks. The live auction started at 6:30 pm with nationally recognized auctioneer Bernie Brzostek.
This year’s entertainment included the artist group, The Inscape Collective, featuring local musician Tim Parker and artist Amy Ruckel, who recently played at Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute, the Everson Museum and VIEW in Old Forge.
The Earth Day collection, created out of repurposed materials generously donated by Empire Recycling was also featured and available for auction.Artists who donated works for the live auction included international artists Christo and the late Jeanne-Claude, Sculpture Space alumni Daniel Buckingham, Katarina Isakkson, Patrick Cuffe, Aimee Tarasek, Ann Reichlin and DeWitt Godfrey, as well as local and regional artists, including the late Henry DiSpirito, Mary Gaylord and John Loy, Suzanne Firsching, John Fitzsimmons, Jenna North, Steven Specht, Tony Thompson, George Hendrickson, Joel Grimaldi and many others.
