On Saturday, October 25th, Sculpture Space will be hosting its annual CHAIRity Art Auction in Utica’s historic Brewery District, with 2014 marking the 25th Silver Anniversary for this renowned collector’s, artist’s, and auction lover’s extravaganza. This special evening features original works of art and functional objects created by national, international, regional and local artists, presented in both live and silent art auctions.
Many of the contributing artists are alumni of Sculpture Space’s internationally-recognized artist-in-residency program. Since 1976, Sculpture Space has hosted over 520 visiting artists from 29 countries and 29 states that are as nearby as New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and as far away as Japan, Iran, Australia and China. Artists are invited to come and live in Utica for two months and create new work, explore novel techniques and materials and engage with artists from other states and countries, In turn, local and regional residents, business owners, artists and art lovers not only connects with these artists to gain insight into their creative process and inspiration, but also share their unique and global perspectives. When these artists return home, they become informal ambassadors; work created while in residence in Utica is subsequently exhibited in galleries, museums and sculpture parks around the world.
Originally presenting “Art Chairs” to local and regional collectors and buyers, the event has evolved over a quarter century to include a wide variety including decorative sculpture, paintings, lamps, furniture, jewelry, and ceramics. The always-anticipated Earth Day collection, created from repurposed materials donated by Empire Recycling, will also be available for auction. To ensure CHAIRity remains a something-for-everyone affair, the silent auction features smaller pieces of art, hand-made items, gift certificates, travel opportunities, and other contributions from local businesses and supporters.
For 2014, contributing regional and alumni artists include Alice Butunoi, Christine Tisa, Rick Mulvihill, Lee Robbins, Jonathan Woodward, Ann Reichlin, Frank Viola, Daniel Buckingham, Katarina Isakkson, Patrick Cuffe, Aimee Tarasek, Marc-Anthony Polizzi, Daria Souvorova, Jacob Francois, George Hendrickson, Joel Grimaldi, Lynette Stephenson, Mary Giehl, Sam Van Aken, DeWitt Godfrey and many others.
