Trace in Bloom — Spring 2013
Planting — October 13, 2012
Pre-Planting — September 27, 2012
Message from Ann Reichlin
I am very excited to introduce my new community based project, Trace. Community members planted 3,000 narcissus bulbs on the site of the vanished foundation walls of several demolished homes that once lined Whitesboro Street. A 1907 Sanborn map of the neighborhood will be used to establish the location of the former dwellings.
Trace begins a new phase of Interventions at 914 Whitesboro Street, the ongoing series of site-works that I have been creating on Sculpture Space grounds since 1998. Each year the narcissus planted for Trace will emerge then disappear, momentarily revealing a vestige of the former density that once defined this West Utica neighborhood. By marking a moment in the neighborhood's past, Trace uses the universal quality of gardening to explore the idea of transformation and continuance.
My work has been widely exhibited including my 2010 solo exhibition, Ann Reichlin: Counterpoint at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Museum of Art in Utica, NY, Raw Material (2012), Davis Gallery at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and New Installations: Artists in Residence (2003) at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh. Between 1998 and 2008, I created Interventions at 914 Whitesboro Street, a series of site-specific sculptures on the site of an abandoned house on Sculpture Space grounds. I am a recipient of a 2010 Community Art Partnership Artist Fellowship, and a recipient of fellowships in 2008 and 2000 from the New York Foundation for the Arts in the category of Architecture/Environmental Structures. Currently I serve on NYFA’s Artist Advisory Committee. I live and work in Ithaca, NY.
Funding for Trace was received with the help of the online micro-philanthropy fundraising platform, USA Projects. Generous community support from Sculpture Space, Jay Groah Group, Strut, Bodily Charm and numerous individual donors have made this project possible.
