Introduction to Welding workshop participants will join instructor sculptor Jon Taylor (Sculpture Space Studio Manager, BFA: Alfred Univ., MFA: UMASS Dartmouth) for the opportunity to learn about and apply welding techniques. Participants will explore and practice basic welding principles involving shielded metal arc welding, oxyacetylene welding, oxyacetylene cutting processes, plasma arc cutting and metal preparation. The principles of metal fusion, identification of electrodes, identification of gasses, and melting points of metal will all be presented. Students can expect to develop proficient skills in the joining of metals after completion of the workshop and may subsequently utilize their new welding skills in the studio on a small sculptural project. The workshop will be Saturday, January 31 and Sunday, February 1, 10AM to 3PM daily. Students will be able to work on their projects Tuesday, February 3; Wednesday, February 4, from 5 to 8 p.m.; and Thursday, February 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. Enrollment is limited. Early registration is recommended. The cost of the workshop is $225, plus a $40 fee towards materials.
Sculptural 3D Papermaking workshop participants join board member local fiber artist Victoria Zacek (AA, MWPAI School of Art; BFA and MFA, Syracuse University) for instruction in creating hand-made paper. The workshop will take place Saturday, February 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants can expect to learn basic techniques of papermaking and to use these skills to create a sculptural piece, as well as a collection of handmade papers, under the supervision of Zacek. The cost of a workshop is $110, which includes materials and lunch. Enrolled participants will be sent a list of suggested items to enhance the papers.
