Brooklyn, NY (Taiwanese)
Residency: September-October 2017
Through my work I strive to articulate overlapping systems, hierarchical structures, and the polarity of power dynamics. I am always searching to understand the movement of power by tracing the violence that occurs when power structures collide. As a young Taiwanese immigrant in the early 2000s, I witnessed how an entire Taiwanese culture was transformed in the strange urban landscape of Vancouver, Canada. Without language, I assimilated to the new North American culture through mimicry and misunderstanding in a short period of time. In the process, my history, memory and identity – things that I once perceived as solid – became fragile and malleable due to the power structures at play within the immigration process. To me, everything in the world is connected in one way or another, and it is this complex connectivity that allows power and therefore, violence, to travel from one entity to the next.
