August 30, 2010 — Sculpture Space Fellows are now living in a house only one block away, safe, secure and comfortable, purchased in December 2009 with a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties. “This is the answer to a long-held dream, and addresses an ongoing dilemma — artists’ housing,” noted Sydney Waller, Executive Director. Greg Benincasa of HR Beebe is the pro bono expert Construction Manager, working with past President Steve James, Facilities Chair Frank Viola and his Committee. Longtime Sculpture Space supporter C Lewis Architects has produced inspired drawings reconfiguring the 2nd floor into four bedrooms, two full baths and an open kitchen/dining/living room. Returning alums, visiting writers/curators will stay on the ground floor in one of two spare bedrooms — handicapped accessible. The first floor also offers a clean workspace and a laundry room, and includes an open conference room with kitchenette for meetings. Plans include installing energy efficient windows and eventually turning the garage into another studio space.
