New Winter Workshop Offerings at Sculpture Space – Open to the Community
December 16, 2008 — Sculpture Space invites interested community members to enroll in two exciting studio workshops in January and February of 2009 at the Sculpture Space studio. The two Winter Workshop courses include Introduction to Welding, and 3D Papermaking. These workshops offer a rare opportunity for local community members to utilize Sculpture Space’s fully equipped 5000 sq ft. studio with the assistance and guidance of skilled instructors. Mini Holiday Show: Candelabra & More and Year-End Celebratory Reception at Sculpture Space
December 2, 2008 — Community members are invited to a special year-end reception to kick off the annual Mini Holiday Show: Candelabra & More, and to mark the culmination of an exciting year at Sculpture Space, on Dec. 2, from 5-7pm. This annual show is a rare opportunity for area residents and visitors to view innovative sculptures by six well-known artists and artisans from the local area, including Joel Grimaldi, George Hendrickson, Eric Reece, Jon Taylor, Patrick Woodruff– and Elissa Cox, from Iowa. Unique Sculpture Garden Unveiling at Griffiss Business and Technology Park
October 14, 2008 — A new sculpture park opened in nearby Rome in October 2008 and exclusively features works by Sculpture Space alumni artists. Large-scale colorful steel works by Tash Taskale (born in Turkey/lives in Syracuse) and Rainer Maria Wehner (born in Germany/lives in Utica) are the first commissioned works for the permanent collection. Sculpture Space Artists Exhibit Work at EFA Project Space, NYC, NY
September 1, 2008 — The EFA Project Space in New York launches a new exhibition program with IN RESIDENCE: Recent Projects from Sculpture Space, an exhibition celebrating the cultivation of the creative process and the crucial contribution of organizations such as Sculpture Space. The show, a collaboration between with The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts and Sculpture Space, is curated by Sculpture Space alumna artist Christa Erickson and museum director Patterson Sims. This exhibition provides a sampling of work by artists who have recently participated in Sculpture Space's residency program. Artists include Jae Hi Ahn, David Bowen, Carlos Ferguson, Abe Ferraro, Wennie Huang, Takafumi Ide,Las Hermanas Iglesias, Beth Krebs, David McQueen, Sterz, Jina Valentine and Maria Velasco. The opening reception is Friday, September 5, 6-8 p.m., at 323 West 39th Street, 2nd Floor.
Sculpture Space Hosts 19th CHAIRity Auction Sept. 13
"Camouflage Your Cooler" – New Addition to Popular Fundraiser
August 2008 — Sculpture Space will host its 19th CHAIRity auction at its Utica studio on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 4 to 8 p.m. New to the auction this year will be “cooler art,” artistically fabricated and decorated metal armatures that camouflage the bottle portion of a standard water cooler. The armatures have been donated by Waterbaskets. As has been done for the last 18 years, inventively altered, embellished or deconstructed chairs and other furniture created by local and nationally recognized artists will be auctioned along with the cooler art. The Earth Day collection, a special group of chairs sculpted entirely from materials donated by Empire Recycling, will also be auctioned. Historically, these chairs have been among the most popular auction items.
CHAIRity includes both a live and silent auction. The silent auction includes items and services donated by local businesses. All profits support Sculpture Space’s acclaimed residency program for sculptors. More …
