2009-10 Artist-in-Residence

About the Artist

I was born in Mobile, Alabama of Midwestern parents who went to Europe after I was born. I spent my child hood in the south of Germany, growing up in a little town outside of Munich. In my childhood, I spent a lot of time outdoors in the Alps. During that time I got to experience all that Munich cultural institutions had to offer, which shaped my artistic pursuits. Upon finishing my schooling, I headed to the United State to start college in Baltimore, Maryland and see what it was like to live in America, so I could make a connection to a country I was born in and wanted to be a part of. Now I have been living and working in Brooklyn, NY for 10 years. I work with people fabricating and trying to realize their visions and making art when time permits.

Project Description

For my time at Sculpture Space I pursued the development of parts and systems for sculptures. I pursued a couple of avenues I started to make the hardware for my geometric light based work.   I continued my interest in the cut out drawings and the positive and negative relations that they engage. I picked up from where I left of in Salina, KS using found objects to create oddities and systems of the found. People, environment and materials in a given city influence the work I create. I like to make installations out of found object and the stories of people that bring them or help me find them. You never now when these little moments are going to bear fruit, sometime right away or months after but it is because of that exposure and when you engage a community something is bound to happen. Having time to think and create away from the worlds we inhabit is priceless.
