Sylvia de Swaan
Sylvia de Swaan is a Romanian born visual artist/photographer who has lived, worked and exhibited in Mexico, Europe and the United States. She moved from New Orleans to Central New York in the late seventies and has had a multitude of involvements in the region and beyond – among them as an internationally exhibited artist; first Executive Director of Sculpture Space, Inc.; independent curator; visiting faculty in the art department at Hamilton College; and recipient of grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts, Aaron Siskind Foundation, ArtsLink, Light Work, Constance Saltonstall Foundation, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Austrian Ministry of Culture, Anderson Ranch Art Center, Society for Photographic Education, among others.
During her tenure at Sculpture Space (1979 -1995) she stabilized the organization, establishing its credibility; broadening its aesthetic orientation; linking it to the national and international arts community by making it a founding member of the National Association of Artists Organizations, and the National Alliance of Artists’ Communities – and earning it a New York State Governor’s Art Award; and a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for the uniqueness of it’s services to the field.
A cooperative working relationship with Jonathan Kirk, made it possible for us them to achieve great successes on minimal resources. Together they oversaw the purchase of the building, which had been part of the Utica Steam Engine & Boiler Works Factory and Jonathan oversaw the expansion and renovation of the facility… a grant from the MacArthur Foundation, matched by local fundraising by the Board of Directors made it all possible.
Sylvia left Sculpture Space at the end of fiscal year 1995, to travel and devote herself to her personal photographic work. Sylvia currently lives in Utica, New York.
Jonathan Kirk was born in Saffron Walden, Great Britain. He earned his BFA from St. Martins School of Art, London in 1978 and his MFA from Syracuse University in 1980. Kirk has received grants and awards from the Constance Saltonstall Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, the Pollock Krasner Foundation, the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, and the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation.
He has shown widely in group and solo exhibitions and has work in permanent collections throughout the East Coast, including the Griffiss International Sculpture Garden in Rome. From 1980 to 2000, Kirk was the Studio Manager of Sculpture Space. He continues to live and work in Utica, New York and is represented by the Robert Steele Gallery in Chelsea, New York City.
