Cesar Cornejo

The work of Cesar Cornejo (Peruvian) developed from an early interest in architectural abstract expressions towards a preoccupation for the integration of social elements in sculpture through means of communication. He explores the relations among place, structures of identity and memory, decomposing and displacing these elements, creating situations in which the different levels of perception become exposed. He is interested in portraying society through the study of the built environment as a structure of meanings.

Cornejo has a BA in Architecture from the Ricardo Palma University, Lima, Peru, and an MFA and PhD in Sculpture from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and has had solo exhibitions at Gallery Light Contemporary, London; Gallery ARTCO and North American Institute Gallery, both in Lima, Peru; Gallery Chika, Tokyo and group shows in New York City, Bregenz, Austria, London and Venezuela. He has had residencies at the Kala Arts Institute, Berkeley, CA, the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in New York City. He has been a lecturer at the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, UK, at NYU and at the ArtHouse in London. His public works have been on display in the UK, Japan and Portugal. Cornejo now lives and works in London and New York City.
