Project Description
Containers move the world – the flow of goods between cities, countries and continents is dictated by freight containers. Whether goods be transported by rail, by road, by sea or by air – containers are ubiquitous. These metal boxes transport modern technology, humanitarian goods, illegal immigrants and asylum seekers, bananas, furniture und waste – everything we have, would like to have or want to get rid off. Like no other means of transport, the container (2.60m x 2.50m x 7.30m, 2.5mm thick) has become an international symbol of our globalized world.

The project “ARTISTS BREAKFAST” gives artists the chance to communicate with each other internationally, present their works, forge new contacts across the Atlantic and promotes intercultural exchange. Two blue containers – one at Alexanderplatz in Berlin, the other in the town park of Utica New York – will be connected to each other. The event will take place between 4.00pm and 8.00pm (Berlin Time) daily from the 24th – 26th of October 2003. A camera, a beamer and a microphone will be installed in both containers. Artists and friends will meet via this link for breakfast at 10 a.m. New York Time (4 p.m. Berlin Time). A half-round table with coffee, bread-rolls, butter, marmelade and eggs/bagels and doughnuts will be installed in the container at each venue. A 2m x 1.5m screen will be installed at the flat table-edge, so that the “other half “ of the table can be seen, making one round table. The broadcast of the breakfast at the other venue occurs over Wavelan.
